07-06-07 4400 Block of Garfield Ave - Fall Victim (Story and Photos by Bob Chester)

On Friday evening approximately 5:30 PM the Pennsauken Fire Department,and BLS
along with ALS 45 were dispatched to the 4400 block of Garfield Avenue for what
initially was reported to be a fall victim. Once units signed on, Camden County
Communications advised that it was reported to be a fall victim from
approximately 30 feet out of a bucket truck.Additionally it was reported that
there was wires and a large tree down. On arrival all reports were confirmed.
The patient from the fall was transported to a medical facility with unknown
injuries.The accident is under investigation.

   



6-14-07 5770 Cedar Ave - All Hands Dwelling (Story by Bob Chester - Photo by Joyce Chester)

Crews were dispatched  to 5770 Cedar Avenue for
a report of a dwelling fire. Battalion 3 was the first to arrive and
reported smoke showing. The "all hands" box was struck. Engine 1121, and
Squad 111 each went in operation with an 1 3/4 hand lines. Engine 1142
secured the water supply, Ladder 112 made entry and ventilated, while
Rescue 113 was assigned FAST duties. The fire was placed under control
within 20 minutes.No injuries were reported.The Camden County Fire
Marshals Office is investigating the incident



6-10-07 217 Griffitth Morgan Lane- All Hands Dwelling (Story and Photos by Greg Taylor)

 Just after 1am on Sunday June 10th, 2007 Pennsauken Firefighters were dispatched to 217 Griffith Morgan Lane at the Old Camden County Animal Shelter for a reported building fire. First due companies reported a 1 story 75X50 structure heavily involved and also a seperate shed fire as well on the same property.

Dispatched consisted of Station's 11-5, 11-1, Snorkel 11-2, Rescue 11-3 as the RIT company. Companies led off with 3 1 3/4 handlines and several forestry lines to both fires. Deputy Director Of Public Safety (Mattera) was Command, Battalion 11-5 (Robey) was operations. Command requested an additional company to the scene, bringing Station 11-4. The building that was involved was the offices for the Animal shelter and was a complete loss. The storage shed was an area for other materials to be stored, also noted a vehicle was damaged as well due to the fire. Companies operated for 1 hr before placing the fire under control. Also noted is that Station 11-5 was just recently at the complex for several deceased animals that were left in a storage freezer after the power was cut to the buildings.

A MVA with extrication also during the time of the All Hands fire. Companies that were covering the stations responded to this incident along with Cinnaminson Rescue-Engine 2013. No injuries were reported at the scene of the fire, but several patient's had to be taken from the MVA. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Camden County Fire Marshal's Office and Pennsauken Bureau of Fire Prevention.

   



5-28-07 1709 Browning Rd. - All Hands Dwelling

 

Pennsauken Fire received a walk up to the station from a civilian reporting a house fire.  The full assignment was dispatched to 1709 Browning Road.Command arrived and reported a 2 story single family dwelling with heavy smoke showing.  Command reported a basement fire and struck the all hands.  Engine 1191 arrived and went in operation with a 1 ¾ “ hand line.  1191 reported heavy fire conditions in the basement.  Searches were performed with negative results.  At the 10 minute mark Command reported crews were still in operation with a hand line with additional hand lines being stretched.At the 20 minute mark, Command reported crews were making good progress on the fire conditions in the basement. One firefighter was transported to an area hospital with smoke inhalation.  The cause of the blaze is under investigation by the Camden County Fire Marshals Office as well as the Pennsauken Fire Department.

 

   



3-4-07  8737 Stocken Ave - All Hands Dwelling

Pennsauken units were dispatched for a reported dwelling fire at 8737 Stocken Ave on March 4, 2007.  Command arrived and reported a 1.5 story with smoke showing from the eaves striking the all hands box. Crews arrived and went in operation with a 1.75" handline as the Ladder Comany went to the roof.  ALS and BLS were added for an unknown status of the occupants inside.  Companies performed searches with negative results.  Additional BLS was called to the scene for a firefighter with an ankle injury sustained during operations.  The injured firefighter was transported to Cooper Hospital.  All occupants were later accounted for.  At the 20 minute mark, Command reported 3 1.75" handlines in operation.  The bulk of the fire was knocked down at the 30 minute mark.  The Camden County Fire Marshals are investigating the cause of the fire at this time. 
 
   


11-26-06 6221 Westfield Ave - 2nd Alarm Building

Pennsauken firefighters were alerted of a building fire. Responding to the box were Stations 2 and 4, Duty Engine 1191, Rescue 11-3, Squad 11-1, BLS and the EMS Superviser.Camden County Communications informed units responding they were receiving multiple calls for a fire at the Village Laundromat with possibly roofers trapped on the roof. Engine 1191 arrived and reported a 1 story strip mall with heavy smoke showing from the roof. EMS confirmed all occupants were accounted for and the workers were off the roof. 11201 arrived and assumed command. Engine 1191 went in service with a 1.75” hand line. Additional crews were sent to the exposures to pull ceilings to check to fire. Additional units were special called to the scene that were responding to their cover assignments as well as an additional Ladder Company being added to the box. Camden City Ladder 3 and Battalion 2 were also called for mutual Aid to act as the FAST. Crews placed several 1.75” hand lines in service from interior as well as from the roof. Roofers were working on the roof at the time of the blaze which is believed to be what caused the 2 alarm blaze. Multiple businesses sustained fire and water damage. The fire was placed under control around the 50 minute mark. No injuries were reported. The fire is under investigation by the Camden County Fire Marshals Office.

     

     



 3724 Burwood Ave - All Hands

Units were dispatched on an all-hands assignment for a report of a dwelling fire at 3724 Burwood Ave. around 2 p.m.County radio informed units that they were recieving multiple calls reporting a basement fire. Unit 1191 arrived to re[ort light smoke showing from the second floor. Crews gained access to the basement to find fire conditions. Several handlines were stretched and water supplies were secured. Command declared the fire under control around the 20-minute mark. No injuries were reported, and the fire is under investigation by the Camden County Fire Marshal's Office.

 



 

8-9-06 2200 Horner - Dwelling (story and photos by Greg Taylor)

On the morning of August 9, 2006 at approx 0430Hrs, Pennsauken Firefighters from Station 4, 2, and EMS were dispatched to reported dwelling fire next to 2246 Horner Avenue.  11201 responded and were advised that EMS was on location reporting a 1 ½ story wood frame dwelling with fire showing from the Alpha – Bravo side, and that all occupants were accounted for.  Communications dispatched the working fire box with added RIT Company Sq 11-1.  First due companies attacked the fire with 2 1 ¾ handlines and truck company performed ventilation.  Command requested another Engine Company to the scene for additional manpower; this brought the cover company from Station 2, which was Squad Co. 11-5.  Command reported they were operating with numerous handlines and making good progress on the fire.  Crew’s encountered high heat and hazards of burned out steps to the 2nd floor.  Firefighters were pulled from the dwelling at one point due to an unknown odor in the dwelling.  Haz-Mat 13 (Cherry Hill Fire Department) was dispatched for evaluate the situation which proved left over gas odors in the home.  The fire was placed under control after approx 30 mins at 0500hrs.  Command did request the services of another company to the scene for more manpower to perform overhaul.  Communications dispatched the cover Engine 1132 and the remainder of Station 11-5.  It was reported that 2 firefighters were transported to local hospitals for an ankle injury and a minor burn to the ear.  Camden County Fire Marshals and Pennsauken Fire Prevention Bureau are on the scene investigating the cause of the fire. 

   



08-11-06 Storm (story and photo by Bob Chester)

 On a day that started out calm, by the afternoon a heavy
thunderstorm caused major headaches in this Camden County Township. Around 3:00
P.M. very heavy rain began falling and it would not ease up until after 4:00
P.M. As a result of this storm emergency workers received several requests for
assistance as rush hour traffic began. A State Highway , Route 130 was flooded
in several areas which caused side streets to become a way home for many.
Emergency workers assisted motorists stuck in the water on the Airport Circle,
Route 130 and Marlton Pike, Wayne Avenue, Chestnut Avenue, and Clements Avenue.
No injuries were reported at this time, however several cars were severly
damaged.




8-13-06 Rt. 130 - M.V.A w/ fire (story and photo by Bob Chester)

On Sunday afternoon a MVC involving a hummer caused a small brush fire. The
accident which occured at the intersection of Route 130 North and Haddonfield
Road happened when the vehicle exited the highway, and struck a utility pole.
After striking the pole there was apparantly an electrical surge causing the
grass underneath the wires to catch fire. Engine 1191 along with Squad 11-1
extinguished the fire. The occupant of the vehicle fled the scene prior to the
arrival of the emergency services.



8-1-06 2617 Haddonfield Rd. - Building Fire (Info and Pics by Greg Taylor)

On Tuesday August 1, 2006 at approx 0230 Hrs Pennsauken Firefighters from Station 11-1, Station 11-5 and Quint 11-6 were dispatched to a reported building fire at 2617 Haddonfield Road at Patâs Water Ice.  11104 arrived to find a 1 story 75x50 building with heavy smoke showing.  Squad Co. 11-1 arrived and operated with 2 – 1 ¾ Handlines, while Squad Co. 11-5 laid a supply line to the fire.  Quint 11-6 arrived and performed ventilation on the structure.  A special call for Tower 13-24 and Engine 11-32 for additional manpower due to heat and humidity were requested.  Companies operated for approx 30 mins and placed the fire under control.  The fire was located in the rear of Gary’s Grille and Deli which is also connected to Pat’s Water Ice.  Both businesses are currently closed and the Health Department was also called due to the incident located in 2 food services businesses.  The fire is currently being investigated by the Camden County Fire Marshalls Office and the Pennsauken Bureau of Fire Prevention.  No injuries were reported at the scene. 



7-30-06 Rt. 38 & Mansion Blvd. M.V.A Rescue (pics and story by Bob Chester)

A motor vehicle collision sent three people to Cooper Hospitals Trauma
unit. The accident which occured at the intersection of State Highway Route 38
and Mansion Boulevard was a two vehicle collision with entrapment. The
Pennsauken Fire Department  Rescue 113 ,Rescue 116, and Engine 1191 were
dispatched to extricate the victim of 1 vehicle. Rescue 113,and 116 went in
service with the tools, while Engine 1191 assisted in patient care and assisted
the crew from 1131 with an 1 3/4 hand line which was stretched as a precaution.
The cause of the collision is under investigation by Pennsauken Police. And the
status of the victims injuries are unknown.    

 



07-28-06 Rt. 90 M.V.A (pics and story by Bob Chester)

Pennsauken EMS, and Fire were dispatched to a reported motor vehicle collision
with entrapment. The collision was reported to be on Route 90 near the
Haddonfield Road exit. Police arrived on location and confirmed entrapment. Once
EMS arrived they were able to access and free ther patient prior to fire
department arrival. The patient was transported to Cooper Hospital Trauma
Center, with unknown extent of injuries



7-24-06 Petty's Island- All Hands Structure Fire( Pics and Story By Brad Allgire)

Sometime near 3am Station 11-4 and 11-2 were dispatched for a "structure" on Petty's Island (end of 36th street). Crews arvd. to find heavy fire from Division "D" and smoke throughout a double wide (modular type) office building. Two 1.75" hand lines used, placed under control aprox. 45 minutes into it. Extensive overhaul needed. No injuries reported.

 



7-19-06 Rt. 73- Ped. M.V.A (photos and Info by Bob Chester)

A service technician installing new gas pumps at a local service station was
struck and injured by a vehicle that exited a local highway. The accident which
occured on Route 73 in Pennsauken, sent three people from the vehicle to local
hospitals, and the service technician to Cooper Hospital's Trauma unit. The
condition of the injured is unknown at this time. The initial report that the
service technician being trapped  between the two vehicles was unfounded upon
arrival of the Pennsauken EMS. Pennsauken Fire Department personnel assisted in
the packaging of the injured. Mutual aide EMS was provided by Palmyra EMS. Two
ALS units were requested by EMS Command. Pennsauken Police is currently
investigating the incident.

 



7-19-06 Around Town (Pics and Story by Bob Chester)

At approximately 19:30 hours the National Weather Service posted a severe
thunderstorm warning for the Pennsauken, Camden area for the possibility of
large hail, wind gusts of up to 70 miles per hour, and dangerous cloud to ground
lightning. The storm the warning was posted about struck a half an hour later
with destructive force. Several trees were blown over into the street, or in one
case into a house. The storm which lasted about an hour was preceeded by the
wind gusts. Several neighborhoods including firehouses were without electricity
for a period of time. Luckily, there were no injuries reported do to the storm.

 



7-18-06 9111 River Rd.- All Hands Building Fire( Pics and story by Greg Taylor)

At approx 0420 Hrs Pennsauken Sq 11-5 was dispatched for a reported smoke condition in the area of 9111 River Road.  Upon responding they were advised that Pennsauken PD were on location at 400 Griffith Morgan Lane reporting a 1 story warehouse with audible alarm and water from the sprinkler system.  They were also notified that they were upgrading the assignment to a reported building fire due to police reported of possible smoke in the building.  Communications assigned 11-5, 11-1, Snorkel 11-2 and BLS 1179 with 1170 as well.  Sq 11-5 forced entry into the building and found a heavy smoke condition with the sprinkler system activated in the building.  Command requested the all hands which brought RIT 11-3, and Mask Services 11-4.  Crews on the interior found numerous pallets with Cocoa on them that had burned completely through.  Due to the Cocoa when absorbs water it caused multiple problems for firefighters on the interior of the building.  Crews operated with 1 400’ 1 ¾ handline and several forestry lines to extinguish the fire.  Command had also requested an additional Engine Company for manpower relief at the scene, this brought Engine 11-4.  Crews operated for approx 70 mins until the fire was placed under control.  The companies remained on the scene until approx 0900 Hrs to clean up and assist the Fire Investigators.  Fire investigators remained on the scene to determine a cause of the fire.  No injuries were reported at the scene.

7-11-06 4127 Frosthoffer Ave - All Hands Dwelling(Story and Photos by Greg Taylor)

At approx 2050 Hrs. Pennsauken Fire Department and EMS were dispatched to 4127 Frosthoffer Avenue for a reported dwelling fire.  While enroute companies were advised that Pennsauken Police were on location and reporting heavy fire showing from the rear of a 2 ½ story SFD.  Engine 116 arrived and confirmed the report and operated with 1 - 1 ¾ handline to the rear.  1160 requested the Working Fire Box to be struck.  This brought Mask Services 11-4, Squad 11-1.  Stations 11-6, 11-3 operated on the scene with 2 1 ¾ Handlines on a 1st floor laundry room fire.  Crews opened up and did overhaul.  1 Firefighter injury at the scene and was transported to a local hospital. 

   



 

4-24-06  6533 Githens Ave - 2nd Alarm Dwelling  (Story and Photos by Greg Taylor)

On April 24th, 2006 at approx. 0120Hrs, Pennsauken Firefighters from Stations 11-2 and 11-4 along with EMS 1170 and 1178,  were alerted to the area of the 6500 block of Githens Avenue for a reported dwelling fire.  With multiple calls taken in at Pennsauken Police it was confirmed that the fire was at 6533 Githens Avenue and it was a working fire.  First due PD units reported a 2 story dwelling under construction, fully involved.  PD also reported that the fire was extending both ways to the Delta and Bravo exposures.  Initial reports from PD were that they still had occupants trapped in the exposure dwellings which brought EMS 1179, EMS 22 (UMDNJ), EMS 1647 (COLLINGSWOOD) and Medic 43.  Companies arrived to find no occupants trapped and no reported civilian injuries at the scene.  First due companies operated with multiple handlines and attempted to stop the fire spread in the occupied homes to the left and right of the original fire building.  It was determined that the exposures were more important then the original fire building and crews began to open the interior of those dwellings to check for further extension.  IC 1100 requested the 2nd Alarm, which brought Station 11-3 and Ladder 11-6.  All hands worked at the scene for sometime with overhaul and salvage.  FM units from Camden County and Pennsauken Twp are at the scene investigating the cause of the fire.  1 minor firefighter injury was reported at the scene and transported to OLOL-ER. 

 

     



4-17-06   Merchantville Unit M.V.A (story and Photos by Greg Taylor)
 
While responding to the hospital Merchantville EMS attempting to turn on Route 130 South was struck by and auto that failed to yield.  This vehicle was traveling in the Northbound side of Route 130.  This caused the vehicle that struck them to overturn and hit yet another vehicle on the southbound side.  Pennsauken Police, Fire and EMS units were alerted by Merchantville that they had a vehicle on its side with people trapped.  As units arrived it was determined that the occupant was not trapped just could not exit the vehicle due to it being on its side.  Firefighters and EMS treated all parties involved.  Collingswood EMS was also dispatched for additional assistance.  Pennsauken Police are still on location investigating the accident.  None of the EMT's in Merchantville were injured in the accident.
 
 


3-24-06  River Road - 2nd Alarm Dwelling (story and photos by Eric Moyer)

 On 3/24/2006 @ approx. 6PM a passing motorist notified Batallion Chief Joe
Hoffman of a dwelling fire along River Road. Upon investigating Chief Hoffman
found a 1 1/2 story dwelling with heavy smoke showing & requested via
communications that the box be struck bringing Staions 11-5,11-1, Snorkel 1124,
Cascase 1145 as accountability & Rescue 1135 as FAST. 1135's crew went to work &
Ladder 1324 from Cherry Hill was the assigned FAST team. Co's lead off with 1
3/4" handlines & at one point evacuated the dwelling due to a flashover on the
2nd floor. The 2nd Alarm was struck bringing Station 11-4, Ladder 1164 &
Westmont's 1514. No injuries & the job was turned over to Station 11-8 & the
County Fire Marshalls office for investigation.

   



3-19-06  Westfield Ave - All Hands Building Fire (Pics and Info by Greg Taylor)

On Saturday March 19th 2006 Pennsauken Fire Department was dispatched to a reported building fire at Merchantville Avenue and Westfield Avenue.  EMS supervisor Tom Madden was first due and reported to the fire department of a 1 story 15x45 commercial vacant building with heavy fire to the rear of the building.  First engine 1142 operated with 2 1 3/4 handlines and Engine 1121 was backup with Ladder 1124 performing ventilation and RIT 1135 as the special call.  1 Firefighter was transported for a minor leg injury.  Fire investigators are on scene establishing a cause of the fire.

   



2-22-06  8339 Stow Rd. - All Hands Dwelling Fire

 Fire units, ALS and BLS were dispatched for a report of a dwelling fire with people trapped at 2:45 a.m.
Police arrived on location and reported smoke showing from a basement fire. Police confirmed that all occupants were accounted for.
Command arrived and reported a 1.5-story, single-family dwelling with heavy smoke showing from the first floor.
Crews stretched a handline to the interior and found fire conditions on the first floor and in the basement. Searches were negative.
The fire was placed under control around the 20 minute mark. No injuries were reported.

   



01-10-06 - Rt. 130 - North Park Dr.  - M.V.A

 Station 11-6, ALS and BLS were dispatched to Route 130 and North Park Drive for a report of an MVA on January 10. Upon arrival, crews found a single-vehicle accident with a victim lying next to the car. The driver stated that she had lost control driving down the highway, causing her vehicle to slam into the median. She suffered severe facial injuries as a result. Pennsauken EMS, along with Medic 45, transported the victim to a local hospital.

   



01-01-06 - 2260 36th St. - 3 alarm dwelling fire

 Station 11-2 and 11-4 were dispatched for a report of a dwelling fire at 2260 36th Street.A police officer called in the box when he spotted heavy smoke coming from the second and third floors of the dwelling. Engine 1191 arrived and confirmed heavy smoke on the third floor and went into service. Command arrived and reported a 3-story, wood-frame twin with heavy smoke showing from the third floor, and struck the all hands. Command quickly requested second and third alarms. All Pennsauken stations, along with mutual aid from Camden City and Westmont, as well as Cherry Hill Rehab, were called to the scene. The American Red Cross was also requested to respond as families were displaced as a result of the blaze.Command reported shortly into the job that the fire was through the roof. Crews operated with four handlines. The cause of the blaze is under investigation by the Camden County Fire Marshal.

This is the first working fire in Camden County for 2006.

11-22-05 M.V.A Overturned Tractor Trailor leaves 1 trapped

Units were dispatched for a report of an MVA Route 130 and Drexel Avenue on November 22, 2005.
Engine 1191 arrived to find an overturned tractor-and-trailer and a vehicle that collided inti its side, causing a serious entrapment operation.
Rescue 1165 arrived and went into service with the tools. ALS and BLS attended to the patient while extrication was in process.
The patient was extricated around the 25 minute mark and then transported to the Cooper Trauma Center.
County Hazmat was notified due to fuel having spilled onto the roadway by the tractor-and-trailer. Subsequently, Route 130 was closed down for hours while the investigation and clean up took place.
The cause of the accident is under investigation by the Pennsauken Police Department.

     

  



10-07-05 2125 Haddonfield Rd. - 3rd Alarm Building Fire

Pennsauken Stations and EMS were dispatched in the area of the Mart for a building fire on October 7,2005.  Police arrived and reported smoke showing from a 1 story warehouse at 2125 Haddonfield Rd. Command arrived reporting a warehouse 80x100 with medium smoke showing and struck the all hands.  First arriving Engine led off with 2 handlines in a side door to find heavy fire conditions inside.  Crews were forced out of the building as the fire became to powerful.  Fire broke the roof line around the 10 minute mark.  The 2nd alarm was transmitted.  Mutual Aid from Cherry Hill and Camden were called to the scene.  Crews set up several master streams and 3 Tower Ladders.  The blaze went to the 3rd alarm.  Crews remained in a defensive mode throughout the fire.  The warehouse was reported to be used by an Ambulance Company in the front and a company that makes industrial material in the rear.  The Camden County Fire Marshals are have the blaze under investigation at this time.

01-13-05 M.V.A leaves ones trapped

Around 10:00 Pennsauken Fire, Squad 11, and medic 45 were dispatched in the area of the Hess Station on Rt. 130, for a MVA Rescue Assingment.  Crews arrived to find 1 car heavily damaged against a telephone pole.  Crews worked for 40 mins before the driver was untangled.  CPR was perfomed on scene.  ALS and BLS transported to driver to Cooper Trauma.  Cause of the crash is under investigation.  Unknown the driver's outcome.  No other cars appeared to be involved that were on scene.

2004 Gross Ave - M.V.A leaves one trapped

Pennsauken dispatched for a MVA Rescue Assingment.  2nd Rescue of the day.  Units found 1 occupant heavily entraped in the vehicle. The SUV also slammed a pole.  SUV driver was not injured.   Driver of the SUV ran a stop sign causing the accident.
