7-30-07 Old White Horse Pike - Fatal Accident

 

On July 30, 2007, around 230 p.m. Winslow units, and ALS were dispatched to the train tracks along the Old White Horse Pike for an ATV accident.While en route units were alerted of a train accident involving an ATV.  Units arrived on location to find an ATV which was struck by a New Jersey Transit train.  EMS confirmed one D.O.A on scene.  The deceased was only 15 years of age.  Police established the crime scene as Fire and EMS personnel assisted in removing all passengers on the train.  It was reported that a group of juveniles were crossing the tracks when one of them had their ATV become stuck on the tracks.  When the train was passing, one could not escape in time and was struck by the ATV after the train hit it, killing her. The area was not a marked crossing but was used to cross the tracks to enter an area common for riders. New Jersey Transit reported this is the 12 person to be struck this year by the trains. 

 

   



5-19-07 704 White Horse Pike - 4th Alarm Building Fire

 

On Saturday May 19, 2007, a Winslow box was transmitted for a building fire at 704 White Horse Pike around 2150 hours.  Minutes later Battalion Chief 2506 arrived and reported a building, 100x200 heavily involved requesting a 2nd alarm be struck.  2 additional tankers from Atlantic County, and a 2nd ladder were also called.  Command established a drafting site at a near by lake.At 2204 hours Command requested an announcement be made for all companies to operate in defensive operations only.  At 2215 hours, Command reported 2 arials devices in operation on Division A and an Engine Company operating with a handline in the rear.  At 2235 Command directed all companies away from the rear of the building to establish the collapse zone.  At 2234 hours a request was made to Gloucester County for additional tankers as well as the Atlantic County tanker task force.  Gloucester County confirmed 10 tankers, 3 engines, fieldcom, and the fire coordinator would be responding.  At 2244 hours a 3rd and 4th Alarm were struck adding 3 additional engines on each alarm.  At 2310 hours an additional draft site was established on Elmtown Pike.  Crews battled the blaze in defensive operations for nearly 2 hours before Command declared the fire under control at 2349 hours.  The building was reported to be vacant at the time of the blaze.  Firefighter from Camden County, Burlington County, Gloucester County and Atlantic County were called to battle the blaze.  The fire consumed the entire building.  Haz Mat Units were special called to the scene due to explosions.  The fire is under investigation by the Camden County Fire Marshals Office and Winslow Township Fire Department.

 

 

 

  

 

 

 

 



1-18-07  323 White Horse Pike - All Hands Building

 

At 10:40 pm a Winslow box was transmitted reporting a building fire.Camden County Communications informed units responding that police were on location with a building fully involved.  Winslow command, (2500) arrived and reported a 50x50, vacant restaurant heavily involved.  Command reported companies would be operating in a defensive operation upon arrival, and also requested the ‘All Hands’.Companies from Winslow, Waterford, and West Berlin were operating on location.  Due to no hydrants in the area tankers established a water supply at a lake several miles down the White Horse Pike.  Additional tankers from Camden, Burlington and Atlantic Counties were special called to the scene. Two engines were placed at the fire building to supply the Truck Company using a Ladder Pipe.  Several hand lines were also placed in operation from the exterior.  While availability of water was a problem, the fire consumed the entire building.  Special calls were made to Chesilhurst, Nesco, Folsom and Indian Mills Fire Companies.

Crews battled the blaze for 90 minutes before Command declared it under control.  Companies from Pine Hill, Berlin, and Cecil were placed in area Fire Houses for cover assignments.  No injuries were reported.  The Fire is under investigation by the Camden County Fire Marshals Office.  Officials ruled the blaze as Arson.  The restaurant had been closed for over a year and has been in the news before due to a double murder and suicide which took place in 1994.  A Winslow Police Officer was fatality shot, along with his girlfriend, before the gunman took his own life.
